“By practicing the principle of surrender, we can trust that God’s guidance, as expressed in our group conscience, will take us right where we need to be.”

Sex Addicts Anonymous, page 80

What is my Higher Power’s will for my life? Simply put, God’s will is that I do the next right thing. At times I have no idea what the next right thing may be. At these times I remind myself of what I do know. I know it’s not God’s will for me to yell, scream, abuse, or belittle anyone. This helps me be aware of old character defects where I attempted to use power over others in hopes of manipulating the situation to my desires.

With so many options before me, how do I know what to do? For me it’s a matter of doing the work. God can only work with what I give him. The more I do, the more God has to work with. Over time, God’s will for my life is revealed through others and by having the work I’ve done bear fruit. This concept is similar to group conscience applied on a personal level—God expressing his will for my life through people.

As I turn my will and my life over to God, knowing I’ve done my part, I can rest assured that whatever comes my way is truly God’s perfect will for my life at this moment in time.
